In Connecticut, Arne Johnson and Debbie Glatzel are a young couple eager to start their new life together in a rental house. They bring Debbie's young brother, David, over to help them clean it. But after spending a brief time in the bedroom sweeping, the boy runs out of the house in fear. He claims there is an old man in the bedroom. Later, when they are all back at the home of Debbie's mother, where Debbie and Arne are living temporarily, David claims that the old man has followed him there. No one believes him, but soon paranormal occurrences in the house convince them that David is telling the truth. It becomes clear that the old man is really a demon. At first he physically attacks David. Then he takes possession of the boy. The family calls in the paranormal researchers, Ed and Lorraine Warren, to investigate.
